Pop star Katy Perry recently found herself facing a fine after scenes from her music video for the single Lifetimes were filmed in a protected area without the necessary permissions. The production crew was fined €6,001 (approximately £5,200) by Balearic authorities for shooting within Ses Salines Natural Park, specifically on the ecologically sensitive islet of S’Espalmador.

What Went Down

In July 2024, Katy Perry filmed portions of her Lifetimes music video amid the pristine dunes of S’Espalmador, a UNESCO-protected site that falls under the jurisdiction of the Ses Salines Natural Park. This location is renowned for its dune ecosystems, rare seagrass meadows (Posidonia), and crucial role as a habitat for migratory birds.

Authorities classified the shoot as a “serious” offense, noting the production failed to secure the required permits or formally apply for access through the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Natural Environment. Despite the infringement, investigations confirmed no lasting environmental damage, so the fine stands as the only imposed penalty.

The Music Video and Response

Directed by Stillz, the Lifetimes video features Perry engaging in adventurous moments—like cliff jumping and dancing on beaches—across Ibiza and Formentera’s landscapes. Following the violation, the production company promptly settled the €6,001 fine.

What This Means for Filming in Protected Areas

This incident highlights the delicate balance between creative production and environmental stewardship. While the Balearic Islands remain a hotspot for glamorous media shoots, this case underscores the importance of strict permitting procedures, especially in fragile ecosystems. Conservationists stress that even one-time filming can jeopardize long-conserved habitats.
